The definition

What is destination sales?

Destination sales is the work of attracting business events, meetings, conferences, conventions, and the room nights and economic impact they bring, to a specific place. It is a specialized kind of sales. You are not selling a product off a shelf. You are building relationships with meeting planners, understanding their programs, and making the case that your community is the right host. It combines outreach, lead management, bid and proposal work, familiarization tours, trade show representation, and long-term relationship building. Most destination marketing organizations know they need this. Few small and mid-sized ones can justify a full-time, experienced business events sales hire. That is exactly why Boom exists as a fractional option.

The fractional model

A business events sales team, without the full-time payroll

Hiring a seasoned destination sales professional is expensive, and the meeting hosting game is a long one. Leads can take years to convert. Boom gives you that expertise on an hourly basis instead. You get a team that already knows the meetings market, already has planner relationships, and already understands how a bid comes together, working your destination like it is our own. Flexible hours, no retainer, no locked package.

Build the muscle

Setup, training, and coaching for emerging destinations

Not every destination is ready to outsource an entire sales function, and some want to build the muscle themselves. For smaller and emerging destinations, we also set up the foundation and coach your team to run it. That includes a meetings inventory of your venues and capacity, a meetings page built properly for search, a meeting planner database, sales call and trade show training, incentive package development, and a meeting sales budget you can actually work from. Build it with us, then run it yourself, or keep us on. Your call.

Who this is for

Destinations ready to grow business events

Destination marketing organizations and tourism boards. DMOs and tourism boards that want to grow business events but cannot justify a full-time, experienced sales hire. This is the Meet in Kamloops and Meet in Penticton model, an expert fractional team instead of a fixed salary.

  • Smaller and emerging destinations. Communities building a meetings market from the ground up, who need the inventory, the strategy, the training, and the coaching to get started and eventually run it themselves.
  • Municipalities and regional districts. Communities and regional districts that want more event hosting and the economic impact it drives, including event hosting strategy work that maps which events to target and how to win them.

Proof this works

Named destination sales partnerships

Boom serves as the contract business events sales team for Tourism Kamloops, where we represent Meet in Kamloops to planners across the country, run FAM tours, attend trade shows and sales missions, and respond to conference and event RFPs. We do destination sales work for Meet in Penticton, and we help run Outside the Box BC, the collective that lets planners reach Kamloops, Penticton, and Nanaimo through a single RFP.

Frequently asked questions

Before we hit the road.

01What is a fractional destination sales team?

It is an experienced business events sales team you engage by the hour instead of hiring full-time. You get senior destination sales expertise, planner relationships, and bid experience without carrying the salary, benefits, and ramp-up time of an in-house hire. You scale the hours up during trade show season and down when things are quiet.

02How is this different from destination marketing?

Destination marketing builds awareness and attracts visitors in general. Destination sales is targeted business development aimed at one high-value audience, the meeting planners and associations who book conferences, conventions, and business events. Boom does both, but this service is specifically the sales side.

03Do you only work with destinations in Kamloops, BC?

No. Boom is based in Kamloops, BC, and represents destinations across British Columbia. We pitch those destinations to meeting planners across Canada, and we attend national trade shows and sales missions on our clients' behalf.

04Can you help us build a meetings program from scratch?

Yes. For emerging destinations we start with the fundamentals, a meetings inventory, a search-ready meetings page, a planner database, and sales training, then either run the program for you or coach your team to run it.

05How does billing work?

Hourly, with no retainer and no locked package. You are invoiced only for the hours and project expenses actually used, and hours can shift between outreach, bids, FAM tours, and trade shows depending on where the need is that month.
